True Colors is the second studio album by Cyndi Lauper, born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper in Astoria, Queens, New York, released in 1986 on Portrait Records (distributed by Epic/CBS) and produced by Lennie Petze and Lauper. The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 25 on the UK Albums Chart. The title track — written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, who also co-wrote Like a Virgin (Madonna) and Eternal Flame (The Bangles) — reached US No. 1 and UK No. 12. Change of Heart reached US No. 3 and UK No. 67. The album also includes a cover of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (1971) and Iko Iko — a traditional New Orleans song previously recorded by The Dixie Cups (1965) — demonstrating Lauper's eclectic musical range alongside her own songwriting. The 10-track album marks a more reflective and emotionally mature direction compared to her debut She's So Unusual (1983), with Lauper's extraordinary vocal range and emotional directness at the centre of every track.
