ELO's Greatest Hits is a 1979 compilation by Electric Light Orchestra, the Birmingham rock band founded by Jeff Lynne in 1970 from the ashes of The Move. Released on Epic Records, the compilation draws on ELO's remarkable run of UK and US hit singles between 1974 and 1978 — a period during which Lynne's distinctive fusion of rock energy, orchestral arrangement and melodic pop songwriting made ELO one of the most commercially successful and musically distinctive acts on both sides of the Atlantic. All 11 tracks were written by Jeff Lynne. Can't Get It Out of My Head (US No. 9, 1974) was the band's US breakthrough; Evil Woman (UK No. 10, US No. 10, 1975), Livin' Thing (UK No. 4, US No. 13, 1976), Telephone Line (UK No. 8, US No. 7, 1977) and Mr. Blue Sky (UK No. 6, 1978) — from the landmark double album Out of the Blue — followed in rapid succession, establishing ELO as one of the defining acts of the decade. The compilation closes with Mr. Blue Sky, one of the most joyful and orchestrally ambitious pop recordings of the 1970s.
