Five – Five (1998)
Five is the debut studio album by Five, released in 1998 on RCA Records. The group — Scott Robinson, Abs Breen, J Brown, Sean Conlon and Ritchie Neville — were assembled and managed by Bob Herbert and Chris Herbert, the same management team responsible for forming the Spice Girls. Five distinguished themselves from the late 1990s boy band landscape by incorporating a harder-edged, hip-hop-influenced sound into their pop formula — with rap verses, aggressive production and a more streetwise aesthetic than contemporaries such as Westlife or Boyzone. The album spawned four UK Top 5 singles and sold over 2 million copies worldwide. Its 16-track running time gives it a generous, album-length feel that rewards listening beyond the singles, and the group's vocal and rap interplay across the record is consistently entertaining. A defining document of late 1990s British pop.
Highlights
- Slam Dunk (Da Funk) — The debut single and the track that immediately set Five apart from their contemporaries; the hip-hop-influenced production, the rap verses and the aggressive energy give the song a distinctiveness that was genuinely unusual in the late 1990s boy band landscape, and it remains one of the most immediately recognisable British pop singles of the era.
- When the Lights Go Out — The album's biggest international hit and its most polished pop moment; a driving, melodically strong track that balances the group's harder edge with genuine pop accessibility and gave them their highest US chart position.
- Got the Feelin' — A confident, uptempo pop-rap track that showcases the group's vocal and rap interplay at its most effective; the production is energetic and the performance is assured, making it one of the album's most immediately enjoyable moments.
- Until the Time Is Through — The album's most straightforward ballad and one of its most effective; a warm, melodically generous slow song that demonstrates the group's ability to deliver something more emotionally direct and gives the album a welcome change of pace and texture.
- Everybody Get Up — A high-energy, crowd-pleasing pop track that captures the group's live energy on record; the production is punchy and the performance is loose and fun, making it one of the album's most immediately entertaining and replayable moments.
