Soundtrack Introduction
The Flashdance Original Motion Picture Soundtrack accompanies the 1983 film directed by Adrian Lyne and starring Jennifer Beals as Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel worker and aspiring dancer. The film grossed over $201 million worldwide on a budget of $7 million and became one of the defining cultural artefacts of the decade. The soundtrack reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart. Flashdance... What a Feeling by Irene Cara — written by Giorgio Moroder, Keith Forsey and Cara — reached US No. 1 and UK No. 2 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe for Best Original Song at the 1984 ceremonies. Maniac by Michael Sembello reached US No. 1 and UK No. 43. The 10-track album also features Laura Branigan (Imagination), Donna Summer (Romeo) and Kim Carnes (I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is), making it one of the most star-studded soundtrack compilations of the decade.
