La Revancha del Tango is the debut album by Gotan Project, released in 2001 on ¡Ya Basta! Records and recorded between Paris and Buenos Aires. The trio — French-Swiss producer Philippe Cohen Solal, Swiss musician Christoph H. Müller and Argentine guitarist and composer Eduardo Makaroff — created with this album what became known as the electro-tango genre: a fusion of traditional Argentine tango — its bandoneon, double bass, violin and melancholic vocal tradition — with contemporary electronic production, trip-hop rhythms and ambient textures. The album was a slow-burning critical and commercial success, eventually selling over 1 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the most influential world music crossover albums of the decade. It introduced the tango tradition to an entirely new audience while remaining deeply respectful of its source material, and its influence on subsequent electro-tango and nu-tango artists was considerable. The album closes with Vuelvo al Sur — a cover of the celebrated Astor Piazzolla and Fernando Solanas composition — which gives the record a deeply moving and authentic conclusion.
