How to Be Single is a warm, funny and refreshingly honest romantic comedy released in 2016 and directed by Christian Ditter, adapted from Liz Tuccillo's novel by screenwriters Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein and Dana Fox. Dakota Johnson plays Alice, a young woman who takes a break from her long-term relationship to figure out who she is on her own, arriving in New York City where she falls in with the gloriously chaotic Robin (Rebel Wilson). The film weaves together several storylines — including Leslie Mann as Alice's older sister navigating unexpected pregnancy and Alison Brie as a woman desperately seeking a husband — to build a portrait of modern single life in all its messy, funny and occasionally heartbreaking variety. A film that is smarter and more emotionally honest than its marketing suggested, and one that benefits from a genuinely excellent ensemble.
