Into the Woods is Disney's adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's celebrated Broadway musical, released in 2014 and directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mamma Mia!). The film weaves together the stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, bound together by a Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) on a quest to break a witch's curse. Meryl Streep plays the Witch with characteristic brilliance, earning a Golden Globe nomination, while Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Johnny Depp round out a stellar ensemble. The film received three Academy Award nominations and is a faithful, beautifully produced adaptation of one of the great American musicals — darker and more complex than a typical Disney release, and all the better for it.
