Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby is the debut studio album by Terence Trent D'Arby — now known as Sananda Maitreya, the name he legally adopted in 2001 — released in July 1987 on CBS Records and produced by Martyn Ware (of Heaven 17 and the original Human League) and D'Arby himself. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, sold over 10 million copies worldwide and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male for Wishing Well. D'Arby arrived with extraordinary confidence — his pre-release interviews compared himself to the Beatles and claimed the album was the most important debut since Sgt. Pepper — and the music, remarkably, came close to justifying the hyperbole. His voice — a rich, multi-octave instrument drawing on Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and Sly Stone — was unlike anything in the British mainstream at the time, and the album's fusion of classic soul, funk, gospel and rock gave it a breadth and ambition that set it apart from its contemporaries. The album closes with a cover of Smokey Robinson's Who's Loving You, originally recorded by The Miracles in 1960.
