Escape from Television is a 1987 album by Jan Hammer, born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, released on MCA Records. The album collects Hammer's instrumental compositions for Miami Vice (NBC, 1984–1990), the landmark crime drama created by Michael Mann and starring Don Johnson as Detective Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Detective Ricardo Tubbs. Hammer had previously worked with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra and with Jeff Beck before his pioneering work on Miami Vice established him as one of the most influential figures in the development of electronic television scoring. The Miami Vice Theme reached US No. 1 and UK No. 5 in 1985 — one of the first purely synthesiser-driven recordings to top the American charts. Crockett's Theme — the brooding, atmospheric synthesiser piece associated with Don Johnson's character — is one of the most immediately recognisable and emotionally resonant television themes of the decade. The 13-track album includes the extended CD mix of Forever Tonight at over six minutes.
