Released in 1984 on Disques Dreyfus / Polydor Records, Zoolook is Jean-Michel Jarre's fifth studio album and one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking electronic records of the decade. Where his earlier albums (Oxygène, Équinoxe) relied on synthesizers and sequencers, Zoolook introduced sampling as a primary compositional tool — using recordings of human voices from over 25 languages as raw sonic material, processed and woven into the album's electronic textures. The result is an album that sounds unlike anything else of its era, and which anticipates the sampling revolution that would define the following decade. An essential piece of electronic music history on vinyl.
Stand-Out Tracks
- "Ethnicolor" – The album's centrepiece and an extraordinary achievement — nearly 12 minutes of evolving, layered electronic composition featuring guest appearances from Marcus Miller (bass) and Laurie Anderson (vocals). One of Jarre's finest moments.
- "Diva" – A seven-minute atmospheric piece that opens Side B with a sense of space and mystery, showcasing Jarre's gift for melodic electronic composition alongside the more experimental elements.
- "Zoolookologie" – A rhythmically complex, percussion-driven track that demonstrates the album's more dancefloor-adjacent side and became one of its most celebrated pieces.
- "Wooloomooloo" – A playful, rhythmically inventive track named after the Sydney suburb, built around processed vocal samples and propulsive electronic rhythms.
- "Ethnicolor II" – A shorter, more condensed reprise of the album's opening epic, bringing the record to a satisfying, atmospheric close.
