The Whole Story is the first greatest hits compilation by Kate Bush, born Catherine Bush in Bexleyheath, Kent, released in November 1986 on EMI Records. The 12-track compilation spans her career from 1978 to 1986 and includes a newly recorded vocal of Wuthering Heights and the previously unreleased Experiment IV, written specifically for this collection. Wuthering Heights — Bush's debut single — reached UK No. 1 in 1978, making her the first female artist to top the UK chart with a self-written song. Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) reached UK No. 3 in 1985 — and famously reached UK No. 1 in 2022 after featuring in Stranger Things, 37 years after its original release. Babooshka reached UK No. 5 (1980), The Man with the Child in His Eyes reached UK No. 6 (1978), Hounds of Love reached UK No. 18 (1985) and Cloudbusting reached UK No. 20 (1985). The compilation gives a comprehensive survey of one of the most innovative, influential and immediately distinctive artists in British pop history.
