Piece by Piece is the second studio album by Katie Melua (Ketevan Melua), released in September 2005 on Dramatico Records and written and produced entirely by Mike Batt. Born in Kutaisi, Georgia (the former Soviet republic), raised in Belfast and later London, Melua had broken through with her debut Call Off the Search (2003) — which became the best-selling album in the UK that year — and Piece by Piece followed with equal commercial success, debuting at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and selling over 1.8 million copies in the UK alone. The album is perhaps best known for the cultural controversy surrounding Nine Million Bicycles: the astronomer and science writer Simon Singh published a critique of the song's cosmological claims, Batt wrote a parody with scientifically corrected lyrics, and Melua subsequently re-recorded the song with Singh's amended text — one of the more charming episodes in the history of pop music and science. The album also includes covers of The Cure's Just Like Heaven (1987), the Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer standard Blues in the Night (1941), and Canned Heat's On the Road Again (1968).
