Vigilante is the sixth studio album by Magnum — Bob Catley (vocals), Tony Clarkin (guitar and principal songwriter), Mark Stanway (keyboards), Wally Lowe (bass) and Jim Simpson (drums) — released in 1986 on FM Records and produced by Roger Bain and Tony Clarkin. The Birmingham band had been building a devoted following throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and Vigilante represented their most commercially successful album to that point, reaching No. 24 on the UK Albums Chart. Need a Lot of Love reached UK No. 47 and Lonely Night reached UK No. 70. Clarkin's songwriting — combining melodic rock hooks with progressive rock ambition and a lyrical concern with epic, mythological and romantic themes — gives the album a dramatic coherence and emotional depth that distinguishes Magnum from the more straightforwardly commercial end of the 1980s British rock market. The album's nine tracks range from the immediate commercial appeal of Lonely Night and Need a Lot of Love to the more expansive and atmospherically ambitious Holy Rider, When the World Comes Down and the title track Vigilante, each running to over five minutes.
