Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is the original motion picture soundtrack to the 2014 Marvel film directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord). The soundtrack — framed as the mixtape Peter's mother made for him before her death — is one of the most inventive and emotionally resonant uses of pre-existing music in blockbuster cinema history. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making it the first soundtrack album composed entirely of previously released songs to top the American chart. The film grossed over $773 million worldwide. The 12-track compilation draws on 1960s and 1970s pop, rock and soul, ranging from Blue Swede's Hooked on a Feeling (originally recorded by B.J. Thomas in 1968) and Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky (1969) to David Bowie's Moonage Daydream (from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, 1972), The Runaways' Cherry Bomb (1976) and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's Ain't No Mountain High Enough (1967).

- The Runaways – Cherry Bomb — Joan Jett and Cherie Currie's 1976 punk-rock anthem and one of the most viscerally exciting and immediately recognisable female rock recordings of the decade; its combination of a driving, aggressive production and Currie's completely uninhibited vocal gives it a raw energy that makes it one of the soundtrack's most dramatically effective moments.
- Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – Ain't No Mountain High Enough — The 1967 Motown classic written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson; the interplay between Gaye and Terrell's vocals gives the song a warmth and romantic conviction that has made it one of the most enduring and immediately recognisable recordings in the soul canon.
