Showbiz is the debut studio album by Muse, released in September 1999 on Mushroom Records and produced by John Leckie — the producer whose credits include Radiohead's The Bends, the Stone Roses' self-titled debut and The Verve's A Storm in Heaven, making him one of the defining producers of British alternative rock. The Devon trio — Matt Bellamy (vocals, guitar, piano), Dominic Howard (drums) and Chris Wolstenholme (bass) — had been playing together since school in Teignmouth and had built a devoted following through relentless touring before securing their deal with Mushroom. The album reached No. 29 on the UK Albums Chart and established the sonic template that Muse would develop across their subsequent career: Bellamy's extraordinary falsetto, his classical piano training applied to rock arrangements, the band's dynamic range from quiet introspection to overwhelming sonic force, and a lyrical world of paranoia, alienation and romantic intensity. Showbiz is now widely regarded as one of the finest British rock debut albums of its era.
