Olympus Has Fallen is a high-octane action thriller released in 2013 and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer). Gerard Butler stars as Mike Banning, a disgraced former Secret Service agent who finds himself the only man inside the White House when a heavily armed North Korean terrorist group seizes the building and takes President Asher (Aaron Eckhart) hostage. With Morgan Freeman as the Speaker of the House coordinating the response from outside, Banning must fight his way through the building alone to rescue the President before a catastrophic nuclear strike is triggered. A lean, brutal, unapologetically old-school action film that grossed over $170 million worldwide, it launched a successful franchise and confirmed Butler as a credible action lead. Fuqua directs with real efficiency and the White House siege sequences are genuinely tense.
