Album Introduction
Death of a Bachelor is the fifth studio album by Panic! at the Disco — by this point effectively the solo project of Brendon Urie, the sole remaining original member — released in January 2016 on Fueled by Ramen and produced by Jake Sinclair. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making it the first Fueled by Ramen release to reach the top of the US albums chart, and sold over 1 million copies in the United States. Musically, the album represents Urie's most ambitious and stylistically eclectic statement to date, drawing on the Frank Sinatra-era big band and swing tradition — most explicitly in the title track and Impossible Year — alongside the pop-punk and theatrical rock influences that had defined the band's earlier work. Urie's voice — a remarkable instrument capable of extraordinary range, power and control — is given more demanding and dramatically varied material than on any previous Panic! at the Disco release, and the result is one of the most vocally impressive albums in the contemporary alternative pop canon. The album's closing track Impossible Year — just piano and voice — is one of the most emotionally devastating and quietly extraordinary performances of Urie's career.
Stand-Out Tracks
- Emperor's New Clothes — The album's most viscerally exciting and theatrically ambitious track; a driving, orchestral pop-rock song with a lyric of self-mythologising and transformation and a production of complete dramatic intensity, and one of the most immediately striking and memorable moments in the Panic! at the Disco catalogue.
- Victorious — The album's lead single and most immediately accessible track; a driving, anthemic pop-rock song with a chorus of irresistible energy and a production that captures Urie's ability to construct a hook of complete commercial precision without sacrificing the theatrical ambition that distinguishes his best work.
- Death of a Bachelor — The title track and the album's most explicit engagement with the Frank Sinatra big band tradition; a warm, swing-influenced pop song that gives Urie the opportunity to demonstrate the full range and control of his voice in a context of genuine musical sophistication and stylistic ambition.
- Impossible Year — The album's closing track and its most emotionally devastating moment; a sparse, piano-and-voice ballad that strips away all production and gives Urie the opportunity to deliver something completely unguarded and personal, and one of the most quietly extraordinary vocal performances on the record.
- Golden Days — One of the album's most melodically generous and emotionally direct tracks; a warm, mid-tempo pop song with a lyric of nostalgia and the irreversibility of time, and one of the most immediately replayable and emotionally satisfying moments on the record.
