Introspective is the third studio album by Pet Shop Boys — Neil Tennant (vocals, from North Shields, Tyne and Wear) and Chris Lowe (keyboards, from Blackpool, Lancashire) — released in October 1988 on Parlophone Records. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart. Unlike their previous albums, Introspective consists of just six tracks, each presented as an extended mix averaging over eight minutes, giving the album a deliberately dance-floor-oriented character that distinguishes it from the more conventional pop structures of Please (1986) and Actually (1987). Left to My Own Devices — produced by Trevor Horn and featuring an orchestral arrangement of extraordinary ambition — reached UK No. 4. Domino Dancing — produced by Lewis A. Martinée — reached UK No. 7. Always on My Mind / In My House — produced by Stock Aitken Waterman and originally a UK No. 1 in 1987 — appears here in an extended nine-minute version. It's Alright reached UK No. 5. I'm Not Scared was written for and originally recorded by Eighth Wonder, featuring Patsy Kensit.

- Left to My Own Devices — Trevor Horn's production and one of the most musically ambitious and immediately distinctive Pet Shop Boys recordings; its combination of an orchestral arrangement of extraordinary complexity, a lyric of intellectual autobiography and Tennant's completely assured vocal gives it a grandeur and emotional directness that has made it one of the most enduring recordings of the decade. UK No. 4.
- Domino Dancing — Lewis A. Martinée's Latin-influenced production and one of the most immediately melodically irresistible and rhythmically confident Pet Shop Boys singles; its combination of a warm, dance-floor-oriented production and Tennant's completely assured vocal gives it a sustained commercial appeal. UK No. 7.
- Always on My Mind / In My House — The Stock Aitken Waterman-produced extended version of the duo's 1987 UK No. 1; at over nine minutes it gives the familiar song a dance-floor energy and sonic ambition that transforms it into something entirely new and demonstrates the duo's ability to inhabit classic pop material with complete conviction.
- It's Alright — A driving, gospel-influenced dance-pop track at over nine minutes; its combination of a warm, rhythmically confident production and Tennant's completely assured vocal gives it a sustained energy and emotional directness that makes it one of the album's most immediately joyful and compelling moments. UK No. 5.
- I'm Not Scared — Written for Eighth Wonder (featuring Patsy Kensit) and given here an extended seven-minute treatment; a slow, atmospheric synth-pop track that demonstrates Tennant and Lowe's ability to construct a song of immediate emotional resonance and melodic generosity for another artist.
