Introspective is the third studio album by Pet Shop Boys — Neil Tennant (vocals) and Chris Lowe (keyboards) — from London, released in October 1988 on Parlophone/EMI Records. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart. Notable for its extended-length tracks — only six songs, each running between six and nine minutes — the album demonstrates the duo's innovative approach to combining synth-pop, dance music and orchestral arrangements with intelligent, ironic songwriting. Always on My Mind — a cover of the Elvis Presley original — reached UK No. 1 (1987) and was the UK Christmas No. 1. Domino Dancing reached UK No. 7 (1988), Left to My Own Devices reached UK No. 11 (1988) and It's Alright reached UK No. 5 (1989). I'm Not Scared was originally written for Patsy Kensit's band Eighth Wonder. The six-track album demonstrates Pet Shop Boys' ability to combine club-influenced production with elegant orchestration and Tennant's distinctive deadpan vocal, giving them a position as one of the most musically sophisticated and critically acclaimed acts of the late 1980s.
