A Night at the Opera is the fourth studio album by Queen — Freddie Mercury (vocals and piano), Brian May (guitar and vocals), Roger Taylor (drums and vocals) and John Deacon (bass) — released in November 1975 on EMI Records and produced by Queen and Roy Thomas Baker. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 4 on the Billboard 200, and was at the time the most expensive album ever made. Bohemian Rhapsody reached UK No. 1 for nine weeks in 1975 — and returned to No. 1 in 1991 following Mercury's death, demonstrating the recording's extraordinary cultural endurance. You're My Best Friend reached UK No. 7 (1976). The 12-track album demonstrates Queen's extraordinary stylistic range — from the hard rock of Death on Two Legs to the music hall of Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, the folk of '39, the progressive rock of The Prophet's Song and the operatic ambition of Bohemian Rhapsody — giving them a position as one of the most creatively ambitious and commercially dominant bands in rock history.
