Out of Time is the seventh studio album by R.E.M., released in March 1991 on Warner Bros. Records and produced by Scott Litt and the band. The Athens, Georgia quartet — Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry — had been one of the most critically respected American alternative rock acts of the 1980s, but Out of Time transformed them into a genuinely global phenomenon. The album sold over 18 million copies worldwide, debuted at No. 1 in the UK and US simultaneously, and won three Grammy Awards — Best Alternative Music Album, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (Shiny Happy People) and Best Short Form Music Video (Losing My Religion). Losing My Religion — built around Peter Buck's mandolin rather than guitar, in a deliberate departure from rock convention — became one of the most played songs of the decade and introduced R.E.M. to an audience far beyond their alternative rock fanbase. Shiny Happy People features Kate Pierson of The B-52s on lead vocals alongside Stipe.

- Country Feedback — The album's most raw and emotionally unguarded moment; a slow, atmospheric track recorded largely improvised in the studio, with Stipe delivering a stream-of-consciousness lyric of heartbreak and confusion over Buck's feedback-laden guitar, and one of the most genuinely moving performances in the band's entire catalogue.
- Near Wild Heaven — A warm, melodically generous track sung primarily by Mike Mills rather than Stipe; the song's Beach Boys-influenced harmonies and bright, optimistic melody give the album one of its most immediately appealing and replayable moments and showcase a side of R.E.M. that their alternative rock reputation sometimes obscured.
