Men and Women is the second studio album by Simply Red, released in March 1987 on Elektra Records and produced by Stewart Levine — the American producer known for his work with B.B. King, Joe Cocker and The Crusaders. The album followed the extraordinary commercial success of Picture Book (1985) and Mick Hucknall's breakthrough as one of the most distinctive blue-eyed soul vocalists in British music. Men and Women reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and spawned two UK Top 20 singles in The Right Thing and Infidelity. The album is a more polished and musically ambitious record than its predecessor, with Stewart Levine's production giving the band a warmer, more sophisticated sound that draws on American soul and R&B traditions while retaining the distinctly British sensibility that made Simply Red such a singular act. The album includes a cover of Cole Porter's Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye — a song previously recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday — which showcases Hucknall's voice at its most tender and emotionally direct.
