Club Classics Vol. One is the debut studio album by Soul II Soul — the collective led by Jazzie B (producer and DJ) from London, featuring Caron Wheeler (vocals on Keep On Movin' and Back to Life) — released in April 1989 on Virgin Records. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1990, with Jazzie B winning Best British Producer. Back to Life (However Do You Want Me) reached UK No. 1 and US No. 4 (1989), and Keep On Movin' reached UK No. 5 and US No. 11 (1989). The album defined the Funki Dreds sound system culture and was hugely influential on the development of UK dance music, blending R&B, funk, reggae and club rhythms into a groundbreaking style that gave British soul music a distinctive identity of its own. The 10-track album demonstrates Jazzie B's ability to combine production precision with a warm, organic, community-oriented musical approach.
