Knee Deep in the Hoopla is the debut studio album by Starship — Mickey Thomas (vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Craig Chaquico (guitar), Pete Sears (bass and keyboards) and Donny Baldwin (drums) — released in September 1985 on RCA/Grunt Records and produced by Peter Wolf. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200. Starship evolved from Jefferson Airplane (1965–1972) through Jefferson Starship to this streamlined, radio-friendly incarnation, and Knee Deep in the Hoopla represented the band's most commercially focused and pop-oriented statement. We Built This City reached US No. 1 in 1985 — a driving, synth-led pop-rock track with a spoken-word interlude from a fictional DJ that became one of the most immediately recognisable and commercially dominant recordings of the decade. Sara also reached US No. 1 (1985), giving the album two US chart-topping singles. The nine-track album demonstrates the band's ability to combine arena rock energy with polished, radio-friendly pop hooks and the distinctive vocal interplay between Thomas and Slick.
