Solitude Standing is the second studio album by Suzanne Vega, from Santa Monica, California, raised in New York City, released in March 1987 on A&M Records. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 11 on the Billboard 200. Luka reached US No. 3 and UK No. 6 (1987) — a song dealing with child abuse that earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year and established Vega as one of the most immediately distinctive and critically acclaimed singer-songwriters of the era. Tom's Diner — the album's opening track — was later remixed by DNA (1990) and reached UK No. 2, and was used by Karlheinz Brandenburg in developing the MP3 audio format, giving the song a cultural significance that extends far beyond its original context.
