The film won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and received widespread critical acclaim, with particular praise for Depp and Bonham Carter's performances and Burton's extraordinary visual design. Dariusz Wolski's desaturated cinematography — all grey stone and arterial red — gives the film a distinctive visual identity that is among Burton's finest work.
