The Hurting is the debut studio album by Tears for Fears — Roland Orzabal (vocals and guitar, from Portsmouth) and Curt Smith (vocals and bass, from Bath) — released in March 1983 on Mercury Records and produced by Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. The band's name — and the album's emotional and lyrical themes — are rooted in Arthur Janov's primal therapy, as described in his book Prisoners of Pain; the album's exploration of childhood trauma, emotional repression and psychological pain gives it a depth and seriousness that distinguished it from the more superficial end of the early 1980s synth-pop scene. Mad World reached UK No. 3 — later covered by Gary Jules for the Donnie Darko soundtrack (2001), reaching UK No. 1 at Christmas 2003. Change reached UK No. 4, Pale Shelter reached UK No. 5 and Suffer the Children reached UK No. 52.
