Communards is the debut studio album by The Communards, released in 1986 on London Records. Formed by Jimmy Somerville — fresh from his departure from Bronski Beat — and classically trained multi-instrumentalist Richard Coles, the duo created one of the most distinctive and politically charged pop records of the decade. The album reached #7 in the UK Albums Chart and spawned the best-selling UK single of 1986 in Don't Leave Me This Way, a gospel-drenched, euphoric cover that spent four weeks at #1. Somerville's extraordinary falsetto, combined with Coles' sophisticated arrangements, produced a record that was simultaneously a dancefloor phenomenon and a deeply personal artistic statement.
