Red is the second and final studio album by The Communards — Jimmy Somerville (vocals, formerly of Bronski Beat) and Richard Coles (keyboards, later a Church of England priest) — released in 1987 on London Records. The album reached No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Never Can Say Goodbye — a cover of the Gloria Gaynor original — reached UK No. 4 (1987), giving the duo one of their most commercially dominant recordings. Tomorrow reached UK No. 20 (1987) and For a Friend — written in memory of a friend who died of AIDS — reached UK No. 28 (1987). The 10-track album demonstrates the duo's ability to combine synth-pop, soul, dance rhythms and orchestral arrangements with Somerville's powerful falsetto, giving them a distinctive position in the late-1980s British pop landscape.
