The Theory of Everything is an acclaimed biographical drama released in 2014 and directed by James Marsh (Man on Wire), adapted by Anthony McCarten from Jane Hawking's memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen. Eddie Redmayne plays Stephen Hawking from his early days as a brilliant, physically able Cambridge PhD student through his diagnosis with motor neurone disease and his extraordinary scientific career, while Felicity Jones plays Jane, the woman who married him and sustained him through decades of deteriorating health. Redmayne's physical transformation — charting Hawking's progressive loss of motor function across 25 years — is one of the most demanding and accomplished performances in recent British cinema, earning him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film received five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, and Jones received a nomination for Best Actress. A deeply moving, beautifully crafted film.
