Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is one of the finest British films of the decade, released in 2011 and directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In), with a screenplay by Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan adapted from John le Carré's 1974 novel. Gary Oldman plays George Smiley, a retired MI6 officer brought back to identify a Soviet mole at the very top of British intelligence — one of five suspects codenamed Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Poorman or Spy. Alfredson's direction is a masterclass in restraint and atmosphere; the film communicates almost entirely through implication, silence and performance, trusting its audience completely. Oldman received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and the film was nominated for three BAFTAs including Best British Film. An essential piece of British cinema and one of the great spy films ever made.
