Jack Reacher is a lean, intelligent action thriller released in 2012, written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), adapted from Lee Child's ninth Reacher novel One Shot. Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher, a former military investigator who lives off the grid and appears unbidden when a former Army sniper is arrested for a mass shooting in Pittsburgh — and asks for Reacher by name. Working alongside defence attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), Reacher quickly determines that the case is not what it appears, and that the real conspiracy runs far deeper. The film's villain, The Zec, is played by the legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog in a casting coup that gives the film an immediate air of genuine menace. The film grossed over $218 million worldwide and is a confidently old-fashioned thriller — procedural, physical and driven by character rather than spectacle.
