Soundtrack Introduction
The Top Gun Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released in 1986 on Columbia Records, accompanying the film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The soundtrack was produced by Giorgio Moroder, the Italian electronic music pioneer whose production style — combining synthesiser-driven arrangements with contemporary rock and pop — gave the album a sonic coherence that matched the film's high-energy aesthetic. The soundtrack sold over 9 million copies worldwide and spawned two major award-winning recordings. Take My Breath Away by Berlin (vocalist Terri Nunn) — written by Moroder and Tom Whitlock — reached UK No. 1 and US No. 1 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1987. The Top Gun Anthem by Harold Faltermeyer and guitarist Steve Stevens won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1987. Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins reached US No. 2 and remains one of the most immediately recognisable rock songs of the decade.
