Labour of Love is the fourth studio album by UB40 — Ali Campbell (vocals and guitar), Robin Campbell (guitar), Astro (trumpet and vocals), Brian Travers (saxophone), Earl Falconer (bass), Norman Hassan (trombone and percussion), Mickey Virtue (keyboards) and Jim Brown (drums) — from Birmingham, released in 1983 on DEP International. The album is a covers collection — every track is a reggae reinterpretation of a song the band loved, giving the record a warmth and directness that distinguished it from their original-material albums. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. Red Red Wine — originally recorded by Neil Diamond in 1967 — reached UK No. 1 in 1983 and US No. 1 in 1988 when re-released following its use in the film The Mighty Quinn. Many Rivers to Cross was originally recorded by Jimmy Cliff in 1969. Cherry Oh Baby was originally recorded by Eric Donaldson in 1971. Johnny Too Bad was originally recorded by The Slickers for the The Harder They Come soundtrack (1972). The 10-track album demonstrates UB40's ability to inhabit classic reggae material with complete conviction and commercial effectiveness, giving familiar songs a warm, contemporary sound that made Labour of Love one of the most commercially successful reggae albums of the decade.
