Album Introduction
Chart Hits 83 Vol. 1 brings together sixteen tracks spanning pop, synth-pop, soul and dance music. Released in 1983 on K-tel, it captures the variety of the era, placing established bands alongside emerging solo performers and club favourites.
Toto’s “Africa” and Men at Work’s “Down Under” sit alongside the electronic sounds of Yazoo, Depeche Mode and Blancmange. Paul Young adds soulful warmth with “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)”, while KC & The Sunshine Band and Ryan Paris provide upbeat dancefloor moments.
The boombox-themed sleeve completes a distinctly eighties package. This photographed Volume 1 LP offers an enjoyable cross-section of the period, moving between familiar singalong favourites and some of its most distinctive electronic pop.
Stand-Out Tracks
Toto – Africa
Layered keyboards, detailed percussion and an expansive chorus give this recording its unmistakable atmosphere. Its carefully arranged instrumentation rewards listening beyond the familiar refrain.
Yazoo – Nobody’s Diary
Alison Moyet’s expressive vocal brings emotional weight to Vince Clarke’s crisp electronic arrangement. The contrast between warm singing and precise synthesiser patterns makes this a particularly compelling selection.
Depeche Mode – Everything Counts
Bright melodic figures and a sharply defined rhythm frame a pointed lyric about commercial ambition. Its combination of an accessible chorus and distinctive electronic textures adds an edgier element to the compilation.
Paul Young – Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)
A spacious arrangement and fluid bass work provide the setting for Young’s soulful vocal. The measured pace creates a welcome contrast to the collection’s more energetic dance tracks.
KC & The Sunshine Band – Give It Up
An immediately catchy chorus and buoyant rhythm make this an exuberant opening track. The combination of pop simplicity and a danceable groove sets a cheerful tone for the first side.
