Album Introduction
Bring a little sunshine to the turntable with The Summer Album, a 30-track collection from the Now That’s What I Call Music series. Released in 1986 on EMI and Virgin, this double album brings together feel-good pop, laid-back soul, surf harmonies and summer favourites spanning several decades.
The selection moves comfortably from The Beach Boys and The Beatles to Bill Withers, 10cc and Katrina and the Waves. Relaxed moments such as “Groovin’” and “Summer Breeze” sit alongside the brighter energy of “Walking on Sunshine” and “Give It Up”, creating a varied soundtrack for an afternoon with friends or a nostalgic listening session.
The blue-sky cover and colourful gatefold interior complete the holiday atmosphere. Inside, artist photographs and track notes offer something to explore while the records play.
Stand-Out Tracks
The Isley Brothers – “Summer Breeze”
A mellow groove and flowing guitar work give this song its warm, unhurried character. The soulful vocal makes it an inviting choice for easing into the collection.
The Beach Boys – “California Girls”
Rich vocal harmonies and a buoyant arrangement bring a classic West Coast flavour. Its bright melody captures the escapist spirit running through the album.
Bill Withers – “Lovely Day”
A supple bassline and relaxed rhythm provide the foundation for Withers’ reassuring vocal. The sustained notes of the chorus turn a simple expression of optimism into something memorable.
Katrina and the Waves – “Walking on Sunshine”
An energetic rhythm and exuberant lead vocal bring an immediate lift to the third side. It’s one of the collection’s most joyful selections, full of singalong appeal.
The Beatles – “Here Comes the Sun”
George Harrison’s acoustic guitar and gentle melody introduce the final side with a sense of renewal. The carefully layered arrangement offers a quieter kind of optimism among the more upbeat summer songs.
